English première of Sharp Families

Tuesday January 16 | 7.30 pm | Regent street cinema | london (uk)

Sharp Families is the opening film of the CinemaItaliaUK 2018 season which will be screened on Tuesday 16 January at London’s historic Regent Street Cinema. The film was chosen by the association which, every year, chooses 12 of the best Italian films and documentaries on the international scene and presents them to the British public. In the British Isles CinemaItaliaUK has made a name for itself by showing Italian films and documentaries in its high standard quality festival, with big names such as Maria Sole Tognazzi, Paola Cortellesi e Checco Zalone.

The delightful setting for the event is the historic Regent Street Cinema in the heart of the West End of London, a short walk from Oxford Circus, where in 1896, after the debut in Paris, the Lumière brothers’ showcased the Cinématographe to a paying audience, and, as the curtain fell, British cinema was born.

All the protagonists will be present at the screening together with many knife- sharpeners who work in London, their clients and long-standing Italian immigrants. The Italian Consul in London will be Guest of Honour testifying the importance of the contribution given by the knife –grinders to the success of the Italian community working in the British work force.

During the evening the book  On the edge of emigration. The Journey of Italian knife-sharpeners, will be presented. In it the author broadens the perspectives of his research and tells the story of the emigration of knife-sharpeners from Trentino to England and to the USA and Canada.

At the end of the screening there will be an opportunity to exchange views with the director, Patrick Grassi, and Founder of the Festival Clara Caleo Green. Refreshments will follow, offered by Italian sponsors of the event.
